A.B. Ryan Dempster throwing at A-Rod is bush league.
Last time I checked, Dempster is on a 2-year contract with the Red Sox. He’s a middle of the rotation rental at best. He’s not the face of this franchise and never will be. All of which is fine. He’s a good position filler and probably even a good guy.
But to put to himself on a pedestal and make a statement for fans and MLB players is attention-whoring at best. At least when Pedro threw at people, he could back it up with a Cy-Young or 3. Who is Dempster to lead this charge?
As for fans who call for hitting a player in the head with a 90+ mph fastball – they should have to face the same fate. And the MLB players who enjoy the art of the “plunk” are testing the baseball gods, considering they have to enter the same batters box thousands of times over a career.
It’s easy to hate A-Rod (I’m still hoping for a lifetime ban) but it’s another thing to wish injury on him. Big hits in football and hockey are part of the game. Intentionally throwing a small rock-hard round ball at someone’s head is not and should not be part of any game. Any true Red Sox fan remembers or (if too young) knows the story of Tony Conigliaro.
Baseball is a game being played by overpaid men who act like boys – and that’s why it’s awesome. If you want to throw punches, throw punches – but let’s leave the little round ball to the bats and gloves.
